There’s no way to deny that moving is easier when the sun is shining. Rain makes an already complicated process significantly more difficult. Unfortunately, for most of us, once a move is scheduled, it must take place, rain or shine.
The good news is that there are some things you can do to make moving in the rain simpler.
Don’t Cheap Out on the Boxes
Moving is expensive. Many people try to cut corners by purchasing cheap boxes. This is fine when the weather is good, but you’ll pay a price if you get rained on during the move. Low-quality boxes quickly absorb moisture and fall apart. The damper the weather, the faster the boxes break down. In the long run, you’ll be happier if you spend a little more and get the high-quality boxes that are better able to protect your items while moving in the rain.
Have Plastic on Hand
You’ll want to have at least a few plastic sheets on hand that you can use to cover both your furniture and boxes if you have to move it from the house to the moving truck in the rain. The good news is that you don’t need a lot of plastic since you can simply use the same piece for several trips. Many people use tarps and show curtains.
Choose a Good Walkway
Rainy day moves are usually the ones with the highest incidents of accidents. The reason is that people try moving boxes, furniture, and other heavy possessions across wet grass and mud. As the footing gets worse, the person slips and ends up injuring themselves in the fall. In addition to sticking to paved or gravel walkways, make sure you’re wearing shoes that have a good tread and give yourself plenty of time to complete the move.
The closer you can park the moving truck to the house, the better.
Have Plenty of Dry Towels
Don’t underestimate the value of having plenty of good towels on hand while you’re moving in the rain, even if all you have is a few rolls of paper towels. Being able to wipe and dry your hands after each trip to the moving truck allows you to maintain a better grip on the next item you carry out. The improved grip decreases the odds of you dropping the item.
Take Your Time
The worse thing you can do when you’re moving in the rain is trying to hurry the process. Not only does rain make things slippery, but it also decreases visibility. Giving yourself plenty of time to complete the move, decreases the odds of you rushing through the process and potentially doing something in the rain that ultimately delays the entire move. A safe slow move is far better than a hurried move that results in broken property and injuries.
