Choosing a Rental Storage Space to Hold Your Stuff During the Move

It would be great if we could move all of our stuff right away in one trip, but most of us find that it’s simply not possible. Most of us find that at some point during the moving process, we need storage space. In many cases, that means finding a short-term rental storage unit that will hold your surplus belongings until you can complete the moving process.

What many people quickly discover is that finding and renting a good rental storage space is not always as easy as it seems it should be.

You will want to start looking for storage space as quickly as possible. While it might seem like there are all sorts of storage spaces available while you’re driving around town, once you start contacting the owners of the facilities you quickly find out that this is one of those things where supply isn’t keeping up with demand. It can be really hard to find available space, especially if you’re living in an area that doesn’t have a high turnover rate.

Once you find a couple of rental storage spaces available, you’ll need to act quickly. There are several things you should look for when considering which unit is right for you.

The first thing you want to consider is security. This is even more important than the unit cost. Not only do you want to choose a facility that has enough security that there’s little chance of your items getting stolen, but you also want to make sure that you feel safe and secure while you’re visiting your storage unit. Feel free to ask lots of questions about nighttime lighting, security cameras, security problems the facility has had in the past, and how management deals with security problems.

Is the unit really big enough for your needs? On paper and when a unit is empty, it can seem huge but once you start storing your personal items inside, you quickly discover that the space fills up quickly. In many cases, it’s better to spend a little more and have enough space to safely store your items rather than having to pile everything haphazardly on top of other belongings.

Don’t discount the location of the storage facility. The odds are good that you’ll be making several trips to it, so the closer it is to your home and the more easily accessed, the better. It’s usually worth paying a little more for the space when it’s in the ideal location.
