The last thing you want to do is damage the walls while you’re moving. Not only are the damaged walls unsightly, getting them repaired is an expense you’re probably not in a position to handle following a move. While accidents do occasionally happen and sometimes those accidents do result in a wall getting damaged, there are some steps you can take to decrease the odds of your walls getting bumped, scraped, or bent.
Plan Ahead
Go through your house and look for the spots that are most likely to be bumped by heavy bits of furniture. Mark these areas and look for ways that you can reduce the damage. Padding the spots that are the most likely to get bumped by the corner of a couch or table goes a long way towards reducing wall damage.
It’s not a bad idea to walk through the house you’re moving from and the one you’re moving into with at least one professional mover. Not only will they be able to provide more insight into the walls that are the most likely to be damaged, but they can also provide you with tips on how to protect the walls.
Pad Your Furniture
Attaching pads to the corners of all your large pieces of furniture is time-consuming and it also means purchasing additional material but it’s the best way to protect your walls during a move. Make sure the padding is attached securely at the corners. Make sure the padding won’t slide off if it does bump into a wall. Most importantly, make sure the padding is attached to your furniture in a way that protects it and your walls, but also allows you or the professional movers to easily grasp and move it.
Wear Gloves and Good Shoes
People don’t realize how important their attire is when they are moving. A good pair of gloves and shoes that are both comfortable and that grip the floor goes a long way towards making sure you don’t bang into the walls with your furniture. The gloves prevent the furniture from sliding out of your grasp while you navigate tricky corners and tight doorways. The shoes prevent you from slipping and tripping.
Give Yourself Plenty of Time
We’ve found that the main reason walls get damaged during moves is because people are in a hurry. They move too quickly and don’t take their time. This causes all sorts of problems, including hurrying through doorways too quickly and slamming the corners of desks and dressers into walls and door frames.
Staying patient and moving slowly during the move does wonder to not only protect your walls but also preserve your sanity.
