Most of us don’t have the luxury of deciding when we’re going to move. In most cases, the time of the move is dictated by a house sale, a rent contract expiring, or a new job starting. However, if you’re in the unique position of being able to decide which time of the year you want to move, some times are better than others.
Traditionally, the best time to move is between May and September. The reason these months are so desirable is that the weather is generally both nice and predictable. That means there is less chance of experiencing weather-related moving delays.
However, before you start thinking that a move between May and September is going to be easy, consider this. The summer is when most places do a great deal of road construction which means detours could cause you to spend more time on the road and can also mean more gas which means the move could cost more than the original estimate.
The other problem connected to moving between May and September is that it’s typically really busy. The fees connected to truck rentals, moving companies, and moving rental supplies, will often be a great deal higher.
If you do plan on moving is May through September, you’ll want to book your moving appointment right away so you don’t have to worry about missing your window of opportunity.
Moving in the off-season is sometimes more affordable simply because the moving companies are trying to attract attention. Sometimes you can even find a good deal on wintertime moving. The biggest challenge connected to moving from October-April is that the weather can make things more challenging. If you’re moving during the off-season, particularly if you live in a state that gets a lot of winter storms, you need to be prepared for a potential weather-related delay. Make sure you’re flexible and give yourself a generous window of opportunity to that you’re not stressed if the weather forces you to stay put for a few days.
Before officially scheduling your move, talk to the moving company you’re using and inquire about the possibility of a mid-week moving discount. Some moving companies offer these in an attempt to encourage people to move on dates that aren’t the weekend.
